Millions of people around the world prayed for the victims of this natural tragedy.
Donations of different types started flowing into japan from all over the world to help the affected people.

This week, Japan astonished us again, when the Agriculture and Fishing Minister Michihiko Kano announced that they will resume their bloody Whale hunt. Once again, the ships from the country of the "Raising Sun" will try again to hunt, kill and dismember “1000 whales" to feed the internal market (the whale meat is sold at upscale restaurants for over 100 dollars a pound … about 220 dollars a kilo)

As if this weren't enough, the Japanese government has committed 74 million dollars (in posteriors press declaration they promised 40 million dollars, still a ridiculous amount of money) to help equip the Whaling fleet, and promised to send a patrol ship to protect the whale murderers (last year they were unable to fulfill their governmental quota due to the interference imposed by the ecologist group “SEA SHEPHERD”).

According to the information from several sources (wikipedia,JE&SR, Yahoo , and others), after the March disaster the Republic of JAPAN has received about 200 million dollars in cash and another 200 in material goods, now the Japanese government plans to use between 10 y 20 percent of it in order to kill whales.

If the Japanese government can waste many like this, is pretty evident that they do not need any kind of donations.

An old Scuba diver told me once that the red disk in the Japanese flag is not due to the "Raising Sun" but to the blood of the whales they have killed.

I leave you my visualization of that concept.

One of gadgets that fascinated me in the USA is the TiVo, a device that can be described as a VCR without tapes, but TiVo is much more than that.

How would you like being able to watch live TV and then pause it to go bathroom? Or rewind it to see again details that you might have lost? TiVo allows you to do this and more.

If you live in a country in which TiVo CORP has activities, your TiVo will connect every night to one of their servers and download the TV programming guide for the following the 2 weeks.

With this information allows the device to do some really cool things: you can forget about specifying the channel and the time in order to record a program just browse the programming guide and select the program to record. Or just ask it to record all programs with “Star Wars” in the title, or any comedies staring “Jim Carey”, and TiVo will do it automatically.

The TiVo on the inside

Beyond the user interface, TiVo is just a computer.

It has a processor (RISC or MISP, depending on the model), a video interface, a power source, a hard drive, several serial ports, and a modem; some models include USB ports, and even a Network connector. The only thing missing is a keyboard!

But this is not an ordinary computer. Every TiVo has an integrated TV tuner (similar to those found one any VCR), a MPG coder (turns the Video into MPG-2 files) and a MPG decoder (turns MPG-2 files into video).

One of the limitations of these units is the processor, which is old and slow. Since the unit contains dedicated circuits to handle the Audio and Video conversion, there was no reason to include a more powerful (and therefore expensive) processor.

Besides storing Video, the hard drive contains the operating system (a version of Linux). And this is one of the greatest news for computer geeks.

By using Linux OS, TiVo Corp. it is forced to freely share all the improvements that they make and distribute, and that greatly benefits the community.

TiVo has fulfilled that commitment (although they usually take their time), but have also generated a great debate by refusing to share those programs and libraries that they developed “from scratch”; some interpret that all improvement (including new libraries or programs that implement existing libraries) must be shared freely, whereas others maintain that only improvements to existing elements must be shared.

If this was not enough, TiVo Corp. restricts (by digital signatures) the software that can run on this equipment; Once again, some people interprets that this goes against the rules of GNU GPL (the license that regulates the use of Linux and other programs), while others interpret that it’s perfectly OK.

This is called Tivoization and a great debate has grown around it, to the point so that the Free Software Foundation has decided to publish an updated version of the GPL that clearly prohibits this activity.

TiVo is a not the only product of its kind, ReplayTV and the new DirecTV+ have similar characteristics. You can even grab a regular PC, add a TV or Audio/Video capture card and a specialized software (Windows' Media Center, and MythTV are some of them), and you have a DIY product with similar characteristics.

But TiVo was first to have a massive presence in the market, and one of simplest to use.

Cue the hackers.

As with most technological products, user groups soon formed, sharing knowledge, and trying to add functionality, discover hidden options, or simply to learn how things works. There are several such TiVo groups, but the 2 best known are TiVo Community (http://www.tivocommunity.com/) and Deal Database (http://www.dealdatabase.com/), this sites became forums for knowledge transfer and sharing, and the community soon started to adapt some common Linux applications to work on TiVo, and developed techniques to avoid the restrictions that TiVo CORP implemented to avoid external programs.

Soon a large number of applications were available for TiVo: FTP clients and servers, email readers, RSS clients, Caller ID, games, websites showing the recorded programs, and even tools to transfer recorded programs from TiVo to a PC.

One of the premises on “TiVo Hackers” communities is that their work should not be used to undermine TiVo Corp.’s income in countries where they offer service. We believe that TiVo is a magnificent product and nobody wants to damage TiVo Corp., for that reason we try to ensure that the information we share will not be used to use the product without paying in the markets that TiVo covers.

iVo's Internationalization:
T

But while TiVo works wonders in those countries in which it has service, in the rest of the world a TiVo device has few (or none) functionality.

At the beginning of its activities, TiVo Corp. provided services in the USA (NTSC) and UK (PAL).

Many Canadians watched with desire that pretty device that the users on the U.S.A. could enjoy and they couldn’t.

Since they use the same TV standard (NTSC) and the same channel frequency, some Canadians began to experiment for a way to “convince” a TiVo to work in that country.

Since the TiVo runs on Linux, they were able to even make great progress, finally developing an emulator (of the official TiVo server), so that (with simple changes) a TiVo “Yankee” could work in Canada.

The system retrieved the TV programming from different Web sites (Newspapers, Yahoo, TV guide, etc.) and formatted the data in a format that the TiVo accepted.

Following the philosophy of these groups, access to these programs was tightly controlled, but living in Argentina, I had the opportunity to participate in the forums (after all, TiVo does not have cover in this country), and I was overwhelmed by the amount of information.

Sadly, when TiVo decided to offer its service in Canada the group began to dissipate, and couple of years ago they closed their forums.

Similar groups arose in Australia (http://www.oztivo.net/), New Zealand (http://www.nztivo.net/), and South Africa (tivoza.nanfo.com), while in many other countries lonely hackers tamed their own TiVo (for example Javier A. Rodriguez was one of first using TiVo in Mexico).

The Australians were of first, and they faced an additional challenge, Australia uses PAL-I as TV standard, so they could only use a TiVo with a norm converter.

They attacked the problem in two fronts, some decided to replace the TV tuner, whereas others tried to find software (since the documentation of the hardware indicates that it would have to be able to handle other TV standards).

Finally, they ended up implementing a mixed solution, they replaced the original tuner with another one (common in the VCRs on that country) and developed a program that intercepts the calls to the original tuner, replaces them with calls compatible with the new tuner, and handles the local frequencies correctly.

Once they solved the problem with the TV standard, they concentrated on updating the TV programming on the TiVo.

They also took the programs developed by their Canadian colleagues and began to develop from there. Nowadays, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and several others, have an impressive infrastructure that provides the TV programming not just in TiVo format, but also in standardized format XMLTV (more on this later) so that it can be used in other programs.

It is a true communitarian effort, where the members can so correct and update the information so which each iteration they database becomes more complete and exact. And of course, it is completely FREE.

Recently TiVo has extended its service to several of this pioneer countries, but only for the newewst models, so this communities are alive and working to give support and programming for the older models.

I’ll finish this history here … If you are wondering why I took the time to write (and you to read) all this: you will know soon, or the day after :-)Mariano S. I got it working and I wanted to share it with you, in case someone else is looking for it.

all you need to do is add the following 4 lines anytime before downloading the data (I prefer to do it right after instancing the WebClient object):

<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace; font-size: x-small;">$proxyObject = new-object System.Net.WebProxy("MyProxyServer", 8080)
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace; font-size: x-small;">$proxyObject.BypassProxyOnLocal = $true
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace; font-size: x-small;">$proxyObject.Credentials = [System.Net.CredentialCache]::DefaultCredentials
<span style="color: #134f5c; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace; font-size: x-small;">[System.Net.GlobalProxySelection]::Select = $proxyObject

I hope it helps.

I Hope you like it as much as I do.

A Prayer For My Son

Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.

Build me a son whose wishes will not take the place of deeds; a son who will know Thee — and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.

Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail.

Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goals will be high; a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men; one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.

And after all these things are his, give him, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, and the meekness of true strength.

Then I, his father, will dare to whisper, “I have not lived in vain.”
I'm here watching the end of the firework celebration of july 4th, 2010, for me this is a very special 4 of july.

This is not my first independence day firework. My first was back in 1990, when Stella (rest in peace) took her younger daughters, Melissa, Jennifer and Pamela to a 4th of july picnic at a park in the outskirts of Chicago. I'm not sure if she invited me or I invited myself :-), the thing is that I went along.
I still remember the hundreds of people, the countless blankets on the grass, the live music band, the food carts (yeah, I like food), and the stands selling chemical lights, blinking wands, american flags and pins.
This was also the first time I've seen such a wonderful firework display coordinated with the live music. Certainly something that I will never forget.

As I look around tonight, I can see new york, Staten Island and a few dozen NJ townships and most of them have set up their our fireworks, and while the are quite far away, the view is breath taking.

But this is certainly not the greatest firework show I've seen.
I think that the best one was back in 2005, when we (Nahuel, Nicolla, Paola, and me) drove 9 hours each way to spend independence weekend at the Niagara Falls.
That night was AMAZING, the number of fireworks, the music in the speakers (recorded music, but sounded really nice), and the illumination "coloring" the waterfalls was really nice. Laying there watching the show with friends by my side, and a drink on my hand, was really awesome.

I remember many other 7/4 celebrations, flipping burgers with friends, watching illegal fireworks, drinking beers on the porch, etc.

Yet, today is the most special one, because today is the first time I watch it as a US Citizen, today I'm celebrating MY country's birthday.
Happy birthday USA !!!!!Mariano S. Cosentinohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01873661943499657764noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3533081977332243447.post-13294717285545651762010-02-19T20:31:00.001-03:002012-10-02T13:16:04.306-03:00Convert Registry file to ADMX Policy fileMany times we need to apply a registry file (.reg) to our many systems (1400+), and it's a real pain ... specially that we really like using Group Policies for everything.
if it's just a few values we create an ad-hoc registry policy and set the values thru GPO, but when we have a large .REG file with a lot of settings things become a lot harder, and we have to start dancing around figuring out how to best deploy this settings.
To make things worse, after a while, we would look at the policy and trying to figure out what those registry setting meant and where they came from ... like I've said: a real Pain ...

In the past, I attempted to create an ADM file for a couple of our most common application, but I gave up due to the complexity of the ADM syntax.

Last weekend I was thinking about this again and I decided to give it another try. I did not want to use and "old" standard, so I decided to research the ADMX policies. I opened the ones I found in my systems and it seemed pretty simple to understand.
So I downloaded the ADMX samples and the schema/syntax definition from MS and got to work.

Luckily for me, the syntax is really simple, XML simple, and I quickly realized that instead of creating a new ADMX to apply the setting of my problematic .REG file, I could create a tool to parse any registry file into a corresponding ADMX policy definition.
It took me the whole weekend but by 2 AM Monday I had a functional (and much debugged) tool.

I did not had any development tool installed on my system so I decided to use good-old VBScript to write the tool. This has the added bonus that anyone can read it and update it without much requirements.

What it does
Reads a registry file (.reg) and creates the corresponding ADMX and ADML files that would allow to set the registry values detail led in the original .reg file.
in order to create the GUI definition required by the GPMC, it makes a few assumptions:
a) the "name" of the value is also used as the caption for all displays.
b) all dwords values are assigned a numeric textbox for data entry
c) all other value types are treated as strings and assigned a textbox for data entry.

Caveats
@ or (Default)
The tools will not handle correctly the "@" or unnamed valuename. This is the one that in the registry editor shows as (Default).
The reason for this is that I have not been able to find the correct way to define this in ADMX/L.

WORKAROUND: For now it's assigning the value to a "(Default)" value, but as you can see in the examples bellow, windows does not recognize this "(Default)" value as the real "(Default)" value.
I will need to find an existing ADMX that sets this kind of values and read it's XML in order to learn how it's done. OR maybe someone can let me know so I can correct the tool.

Hex, Hex(0) ...
This is another example of things that I was not able to learn from the ADMX files that I have available.
We have several cases of registry files that assing a value composed of several 2 char Hexadecimal values, but I have not find any ADMX file that applies this kind of settings to to policies.
WORKAROUND: For now, and until I can find the way to do it correctly, the script will make this hexadecimal values into a text.
I will need to find an existing ADMX that sets this kind of values and read it's XML in oder to learn how it's done. OR maybe someone can let me know so I can correct the tool.

Usage:

CSCRIPT REG_2_ADMXL.vbs registry-file language [name]

registry-file is the name and path of the registry file to be converted.
language is the language and culture to be used, ie: en-US, sp-AR, etc.
name Display Name to show in the GPO. if omited "REG_2_ADMXL Generated Policy" will be used.

The output file will be named after the .REG file (if the input is myfile.REG, the output will be myfile.ADMX and myfile.ADML.
The ADMX output file will be saved in the same folder the input .REG file is located, while the ADML output file will be saved in a subfolder of the one the .REG file is located. The subfolder will be named after the language specified.
So, if the reg file is C:\myapp\myfile.reg and the lang is en-US, then the ADMX file will be as in C:\myAPP\myfile.ADMX and the ADML file will be saved as C:\myAPP\en-US\myfile.ADMX

EXAMPLE

I converted the following .reg file into ADMX/L

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Marianok\Myapp]
@="default value of the key"
"MyAppName"="SuperApp123"
"MyAppServer"="SomeServer"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Marianok\Myapp\Config]
"bottom"=dword:00000000
"left"=dword:00000000
"right"=dword:00000000
"top"=dword:00000000
"color"="red"

So I ran the following command:

CSCRIPT REG_2_ADMXL.vbs c:\temp\myregfile.reg en-us

(the last parameter basically defines the language and culture to use, in this case US English)

The tool generated 2 files c:\temp\myregfile.ADMX and c:\temp\en-us\myregfile.ADML

Once you have the ADMX and the ADML files you can use them in the Group Policy Management Console to edit your GPOs more confortably.

The following 4 images show the test GPO created from the .REG file above

Notice that the diferent registry keys (the Path) became nodes on the tree, and that the "Config" Key is correctly subordinated to the "MyApp" key.
Also notice that in order to help the people that might be using this ADMX file in the future, the tool will add a description to each one of them detailling what keys is being affected.

Here one of the values was selected.
Notice that the "@" from the .reg file was replaced with (Default).
Also notice that the tool has added a comment to each setting detailling what registry value will be affected, what was the datatype reported in the .reg file and what was the value assigned in the original .reg file.

Same for the MYAPP\CONFIG node.
Notice that there are 4 values, but only 3 are enabled (only this 3 will be applied to the targets).

In this screen you can see one being edited.
Once again you can see the description/help that was created by the tool based on the .reg file.
Also notice that the value that was assigned in the original .reg file has become the default value for the field.

This is the report from the Group Policy Management

This is a millon times more readable than the mess of registry keys and setting that the GPM would be showing if we did not have the ADMX/L files inplace.
Notice that only 3 values are listed under the CONFIG section, that it's because the fourth is still disabled.

Now, after the GPO was applied to the user/workstation, we can see the registry:

Notice the issue I was mentioing before with the (DEFAULT) valuename. There are 2 of them one without data and the other witht he data we were trying to assign.
Had I imported the registry file into this system the first one would have a value ("default value of the key"), but this is not happening.

Here is the Config folder, notice that the fourth value does not show, just as expected.

WOW, that was a long post :-) ... sorry, but I'm really exited about this work :-)
if you want it, feel free to download it from my siteMariano S. I tried doing a bootsect / nt60 , but this did not help ...

I thought that maybe the computer was slow to access the USB and it might only be a matter of patience. It was already 1 am, so I decided to call it the night and to leave the system running, but the next morning everything was unchanged.

The next day, I borrowed the USB drive, and decided to try again ...

Researching a bit more I found that " How To: Install Windows 7 Beta from a USB Key! " recommends formatting the disk as NTFS rather than FAT.

I gave it a try, this time the system started to boot, but it stopped with an error:

File:\Boot\BCD
Status: 0xc0000001
Info: An error occurred while trying to read the boot configuration data

I Google it and Bingil , but did not find a convincing solution...
I decided to try again from scratch, and sure enough, it failed again (as Einstein would say: "only a fool does the same thing over and over and expecting different results").

There I remembered that a few days ago, while updating the firmware of a system at work, a vendor insisted about not booting from a USB over 2 GB. I figured there might be a connection.
I had a 2GB USB, the issue is that the installation DVD of Windows 7 has more than 2 GB and therefore had not tried.

I decided to test, at least to help determine the problem.
Copied the whole disc except for a single file (\sources\install.wim), I knew that that file is the most important of the installation process, but I decided to continue, after all this was just a test to see if I could boot.

I placed the USB on the table, and rebooted, and lo and behold! The Windows 7 Setup began to run. Of course, as soon as I clicked install, the program complained that he could not find the file.

OK, one step forward and a new challenge...

I Connected the USB 5 GB (still had the image of my previous attempts) and clicked install, the 5 GB USB was not accessed even once and the installation failed just as before ...

I Rebooted the system to try again. This time, the 5GB USB was read, but the installation failed as before.

Looking around, I found a way to access the CMD, and I began to investigate.

My hard drive was there, in the good old C: my 2GB USB was seen as D: and the 5GB as E:, the system was running from a virtual drive X: (later determined that it was based on information from \sources\boot.wim ).

Last year we created the images for the 1200+ Windows Vista machines at work, and I became quite knowledgeable of the Windows installation process. I knew that the installation program can told from where to take install.wim information.
This option is primarily for organizations to put the file on a centralized server, or a modified version of the OS, but it should be fine for my needs.
As far as I remembered, there were two ways to specify this setting to the installer process: through an “unattended installation file” (what we had done in at work to configure the VISTA machines), or through a parameter to the executable.

I did not have an "unattended file" (nor the time or the desire to create one), so I decided to use the parameter InstallFrom for the executable.

Once again, I went to CMD, and run " setup.exe /InstallFrom:e:\sources\Install.wim ", the installer ran, but gave me the same error than before. I tried a few variations (without the file name, from different locations, adding the directory path, etc), but none worked.

I started to check the virtual disk X:, and navigated to the “Phanter” directory witch, I remembered my experience with VISTA, has the log and records of the installation process.

After a while of reading those files (very entertaining, especially when using only TYPE MORE ), I realized what my problem was: The installation and was already running.
This CMD window in which I worked had been launched from the installer and was running within the environment of the installation program, so every time I executed the setup command, the installer was restarted in memory instead of a new one being executed. That is why it was ignoring my parameters.
The program was set to find the installers in D:\Sources, and there no convincing him otherwise.

Thus, I had two choices: to create an automated installation file (unattended XML file), or tricking the system to use the USB 5GB instead of 2GB.
I needed to replace an existing disk (D:) with another disk (E:), I knew the E: drive had all the same information from the D:, so if I could replace then I should have no problem even if the system tried to look for files in the old location.

Had I have access to the disk manager I would had simply changed the drive letters, but this was not the case.

Then remembered an old DOS 3.11 command SUBST which lets you assign a drive letter to a directory.
It was a very useful command when, back in my PC-XT, we copied the games to the HD diskettes, sometimes a game would complain if it was ran from a directory, in those cases we used SUSBST to give it a drive letter and played the game from that “drive”.

I wasn’t sure if the command was still available, particularly in the reduced CMD console of the installer, but turned out to be there.

I gave it a “dry test”: SUBST R: E:\ ran smoothly, and DIR R: returned the expected result.
I knew that SUBST cannot use a drive letter that is already in use, thus I needed to eliminate the D: in order to replace it with the E:, but if I boot without the 2GB USB I would not be able to reach the installer. Catch 22

After a bit of thinking, I realized that the installer was running on Windows (a reduced version but still Windows), and I knew that the plug-and-play was working (it had detected my keyboard as soon as I plugged in).
With a little luck, if I removed 2GB USB the system would release the drive letter ... or it would hang completely:-P

I crossed my fingers and removed the USB 2GB ... the system continued to operate, good sign. :-)
I ran SUBST D: E:\ and it executed without errors, I did a DIR D: I got the expected results.
It was time for the ultimate test: I clicked on install and hold my breath until the system started to install my new OS ...

A few minutes later my tablet joined the Windows 7 family !!!! :-)

Lessons learned:
"Never retreat, never surrender"
It took me 3 days and many attempts, but finally achieved what I wanted!

"Long life to DOS!"
Most of the troubleshooting I did was using 2 very old commands TYPE and MORE , and also the solution was an old command: SUBST .Mariano S.

My Girlfriend called to let me know that our dog "Bioy" has died.

"I say our dog because what we love, we considere it our property" so goes the song by Alberto Cortes, and it's the true.

It was Romina's dog, she got it as a puppy, named after her favorite writer and raised and care for him over the year, saving his live many times along the way, she introduced us to each other a few years ago. It might have been her dog, but I loved as my own, and while many times he was a tricky SOB I loved him (and I love him) very much.

We knew that he did not have much rope left, after all he was about 14 years old, which as they say translates to over a hundred "dog years", but we selfishly hopped that the would live a couple more years, that he would be able to see our house fixed, and that he would be able to meet the brother or sister that we were planning to acquire And, we never voiced, but I think we were both hopping that one day he would meet our own children.

I can believe that he really is dead, he cheated death so many times that it's hard to understand that he is no longer with us.

We was showing his age, his mouth hair was almost white and he was moving slowly, still, every once in a while, he would summon all his strength and ability to squiz his body through the fence and get through the window. How was he able to pass his body through the small holes of the fence ? That's a secret he took with him.

I remember how happy he was after I cleaned up the area under the grill and prepared it for him to sleep. I was not sure if he would really like it but he loved it right away.

He has a crazy dog, eating only when we were around if no one was close by he would have to be really hungry to eat, and many of his "Doggie" bites ended up feeding the birds of the neighborhood that came to enjoy the free lunch.

I meet him old, but he was really beautiful he was a bit of an "artist", barely walking one instant and at the next he was climbing everywhere to get same place he was not supposed to. He respected and obeyed Romina (most of the time, anyway) but he had little care for what I might have to say (decidedly he did not see me as the Alpha-male of the house :-) ).

As you can see, this hit me hard, not only have I lost my dog, he died while I'm thousands of kilometers away, I can not say "goodbye" to him, and I can not hug and comfort the woman I love in such a difficult moment.

But I know he loved me, and I love him very much.

Goodbye Bioy, I would have like to get to know you even better and for a few more years, thanks for all the love you gave us and for so many great memories.

I love you !!!

They will reply to you based on the first couple of lines, and will then ask you for data that was clearly detailed in line 10, or a few lines beyond.

Imagine my joy when the Engineering Department to inform them that this was (is) a known bug, already working on, and that would be solved soon.
They even gave me an "engineering case number" (2235901) to add to the nearly 30 numbers of cases (no, I'm not exaggerating, they open a new case with each contact) that I already had.

But why would I care, the issue "would be solved soon"

One month later, I contacted the technical support (another case number) to see that was happening with this solution and when was going to be ready.
They replied that the Engineering Dept. had encountered some problems and did not know when it would have it fix.

Two months later, the same story: "We appreciate your being a Premium User and we are committed to providing you with excellent service" ... "Our Engineering Team has determined that there is not an immediate fix for this issue, and they are continuing to work on the resolution" ... "I do appreciate your patience."

The following month, ditto.

Other months, ditto.

I forgot for a while, until I got an email from the billing department of Yahoo Mail: "Thanks for using Yahoo! Mail Plus." ... "it's time for the annual auto-renewal of your service" ... "your credit card will be charged the annual fee of $19.99"

It was like putting salt in the wound.

Once again, I Contacted the technical support department of yahoo mail.
Once again I got the same template answer (thank you for all your money, our developers have no idea of what is going (or maybe the have not even look into it), try another days, maybe you'll get lucky).

I forwarded the email from the support team to the billing department and requested to be credited for the many months I had been unable to use the service. Knowing how the gross incompetent they can be, I specifically mentioned that I did NOT wanted my premium account canceled, I just wanted to be refunded for the months with this problem.
I then attached a history of correspondence with the technical dept.

The billing dept Yahoo responded by asking me to complete a form at billing.yahoo in order to open the case.
Obediently, I followed the link and found out that the form was to claim for "malfunction of the website when trying to make a payment."

Have I Already mentioned that the Yahoo people do not read the messages that are sent to them?
Have I already mentioned that they reply to emails like decerebrated machines?

Anyway, I Complete the form as much as I could all the way to the end and in the Note field I pasted the email that I had previously sent to Yahoo's billing dept.

A few days later, I received a mail from Yahoo billing dept asking me to explain what the problem was. I detailed the problem once again and attached, again, the history of the exchange with the technical dept.

Two days later, another email from the billing dept Yahoo: "Could you give us your username and the case numbers opened with technical support?". (Information they had 3 times in the emails I have sent to them and that I have entered in the form when I opened the case at billing.yahoo)

VERIFIED: The technicians at Yahoo! do not know how to read!!!!

I forwarded them this information once more and explained what I wanted:
a) I did not wan to be charged a renewal fee,
b) I did not wanted to be charged until the issue was solved, and
c) once the issue is solved I wanted to be able to use the system without charge for the period that I was not able to use the system.

A day later, I received an automated mail from Yahoo: "Your account has been canceled," followed by an email from someone in the billing dept of Yahoo: "I've canceled your account and we are refunding to your card in the amount of $18 for the months could not use the system "

NO, I'm not kidding, is the true !

I answered something like "YOU DID WHAT ?????????????? I Asked you NOT to cancel my account! Immediately undo the change, so I do not loose any emails!"

The reply Response (from another clown in the billing dept Yahoo) was: "Sorry, there was a mistake." ...
On Saturday I went to see the site of the United Nations and the Red Cross ... I only expected to see the buildings from the outside and nothing more, but I got a pleasant surprise when I found that the museum of the "red cross and red crescent moon" was open. Admission is cheap CHF 10 (10 Swiss francs, about 9 U.S. dollars).

The museum is very nice, and very interactive, not one of those boring museums that display hundreds of things in a room with a small sign below each one.
This museum is a great room divided into sections, but keeping the feeling of and open space and full of light.
The exhibitions are really big and bright, with lots of graphics and data in many languages, sounds, videos and automatic exhibits (which are activated upon entering a section), and a great way to convey their message, for example a 6'x6'x3' room, representing a windowless cell where representatives of the ICRC found a large number of political prisoners, dozens of glass panels containing the original files of all prisoners of war, murals detailing yearly the different events world (natural or human) involving the participation of the ICRC (notably, the wall of 1982 did not contain any mention of the Malvinas conflict).

Another interesting thing is this block of wood with an inscription inviting all to write their own definition of freedom. Well, most of the comments are in Spanish.

When I got in the museum I thought I would go thru it in a few minutes, but it's so interesting that several hours later I was surprised to hear a reminder that the museum would close in 15 minutes.

One interesting thing I discovered when looking for a hotel for the weekend was that several of the hotels here give you a free travel card valid for all mass public transport, taking into account that a travel card for 2 hours here is 2 CHF (U.S. $ 1.5 approx), this gift from the hotel / Swiss municipalities are a real bonus.

For example, the Hotel Grand-Pre, where I staid cost CHF 100 (that was the price line, if you contract directly with the hotel would have 50% more) and included the airport suttle and the transport card, whereas the transport from the airport can cost approximately CHF 20 or 25, and possibly would have spent about CHF 15 on buses, trams, etc. So the hotel came out a real bargain. Especially in Geneva where the hotels are more luxurious and ridiculously expensive.
For example, L'Anglaterra (which are often some colleagues when they come for business) costs more than U.S. $ 300 .... WOW !!!!!!! ... Clearly that is not the same kind of hotel ... the one I use is a little more humble :-P

I used the card a lot, not only to and from the nations of the area (where the UN, the ICRC, and most of the embassies are) but also when I got tired of walking, or I was cold, and even when I had no idea of where to go. I would then just get in to the first bus or tram to show up and just see where it took me. Whenever I see something interesting, I just got off there.

That's how I got to the Geneva channels, got off the bus and started walking along the shore until the lake and a little bit arround it. YES, it was cold, but the view really worth it.

look at this photo of the lake, noticed the whitish spots on the water, is not a reflection of the lights, it's my camera's flash illuminating the stones in the bottom. I was about 6 feets high, and water meters deep would be another 3 or 4 feets... That's what I call clear waters !!!!

As I commented on another blog, on Sunday we traveled from Geneva to Lausanne (the city where we had the meetings).

Rather than going the direct way, we decided to detour a bit and we first went to the headquarters of our company:

From there we went to a ski resort nearby and then went to eat (You can see me here tasting some frog's legs), and finally to the hotel.

since we had over 4 hours until we meet for dinner, I decided to go for a walk. I went down the hill / mountain to get to the lake, then walked along the lake until sunset and then I took a bus to the hotel (with a free travel card, courtesy of the hotel and the city of Lausanne).
The worst thing is the inability to visit these new places :-)

I mean you get to the city (probably by plane), you register at the hotel almost immediately, and (if you arrive early) can probably walk a little while.

At night, you probably have an official welcome dinner with other participants of the meetings (usually in the same hotel). Even if nothing is organized, by this moment you have run into several other colleagues and they will be organizing to go dinner together, but many will be tired by the journey, and you are in a strange city at night, so people will want to stay relatively close to the Hotel.

The next day, the meetings start early, which, unless you're really a morning kind of person (which I am not), you can forget about seeing something in the morning (unless you have to walk to the hotel meeting room, which is really uncommon as meetings are usually made in the same hotel).

The meeting rooms around the world are surprisingly similar, boring and sterile rooms, with a series of tables symmetrically distributed. The existence, size and number of windows is inversely proportional to the beauty of the landscape outside, where the landscape is really wonderful meeting room are in the middle of the building, without windows or with a few very small windows; on the other hand when landscape does not call the attention of anyone, the windows are really abundant ... clearly that no one looks at them ...

Lunch is usually at the same place where the meetings take place (more than once are in the same room).

At night, you have a dinner scheduled, and in my experience is the best part of the day and the funniest. Not just for the free food and drink, but also because they are usually in really nice places (a marina, a settlement in the desert, an old castle, or an amusement park, for example).

You see, even in the most wonderful place in the world, is really difficult to do much "sightseeing" on this "working" days, you might go for a little stroll and such, but the only thing that you get to know well is the airport (due to the time you spend waiting for bags, check-in, security points, or just waiting for your flight).

Real tourism can only be done before or after those "working" days, arriving a couple of days before or staying a couple of extra days at end of the meetings.

Each time I get told about and upcoming business trip I check the dates, to see how much can I extend the trip to enjoy a little of life.

In general, the extra days means I have to pay some nights hotel (which is why I rarely stay this extra nights at the hotel that the company pays for the working days), but sometimes you can get someone in a good mood and get the company to cover the hotel for extra nights, it is rare but has happened a few times.

What it's always "included" is the flight. No matter for how many days is the trip, the fare is paid by the company, and it's really rare that they will give you trouble in getting an extra couple of days (if you ask before they issue the ticket). And were is in business class or "grabbed from Wing" class (as I'm send most of the time), an airline ticket is something that should not be wasted :-)

That is what I did this time, I left the US on Friday (arrived here on Saturday) and I am leaving the Monday after the meetings, so I added 3 or 4 days for vacation.

The second thing I do when I learn about a trip is to check what is there to do, mainly to see if there is any place to dive. This trip to Switzerland was no exception, but while it was possible to do some diving, the temperature of the lake (after all, we are in winter here) and the available operators did not convince me, so I decided to so just sightseeing.

OK, I wrote too much for a day, I leave you all a hug.Mariano S. Cosentinohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01873661943499657764noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3533081977332243447.post-30457270358455598002009-01-26T14:48:00.003-02:002009-02-04T16:46:52.212-02:00I'm in Lausanne, Switzerland

Today I write from the shores of Lake Geneva in the city of Lausanne.
It's really hard to describe places as beautiful as this.

When you walk through the streets of cities like this, where each step is either uphill or downhill, but never horizontal, one can't help to think that despite the difficulties they managed to make progress, not only economic progress but also social progress, while at the same time our beloved Argentina, like most of Latin America, is seriously stuck in both aspects of their development (and I say stuck for not saying regressing).

Yes, someone will jump to say that this country is what it is thanks to money they store, but to get to that, to the point where people (good or bad) rely on this place to deposit their funds, to arrive to that point this country should have done a great job, since (despite what some people thinks) trust is not a right, nor is it something that comes from the grace of the Holy Spirit, trust is earned and you must deserve it.

Uppsss I'm rambling a lot today!
That happens when you stroll for hours by a beautiful lake, clean and full of wildlife :-)

I leave you with a hug.
Marianok.Mariano S. I really enjoyed your 1st birthday party tonight.
Best Regards, MarianokMariano S.
I'm watching CNN while the poll results keep coming in.

Many laugh at me when I mentioned that I was looking forward to the day I could vote for Barack Obama for President, in his reelection campaign.

Well, the dream is a lot closer, right now 10:29 PM EST Barack Obama is practically the President Elect, next year I'll be able to apply for citizenship and in 4 year I'll be able to cast my vote for him as President.

It's so nice to keep your dreams alive.Mariano S. Best Regards to all !
Mariano S. (Labor Day in the USA), gave me 5 days off.
So on Thursday August 28 I left work at 5 thirty in the afternoon and pointed the truck south to visit my sister and her family.

When I began to ruminate the idea of the trip, I took the opportunity as a good excuse to buy a GPS, a GARMIN C580, which was a very magnificent purchase!

The truth is that driving in the USA is a pleasure, the whole journey by highways, this motorways are wonderful and free (on the trip to Alabama from NJ pass just one toll for a total of $ 0.75 (seventy-five cents) in the return trip i did not pay anything, that's because I did pass through this place (there was a detour due to an accident in transit).

Every so many miles, there are rest area with restrooms, coffee machines, soft drink, candy, natural walking area, tables for eating outdoors, and even grills for cooking, and area for animals.

These areas are designed for both family and commercial vehicles can stop and so they have sectors so that large trucks can stop and move without hindering traffic and movement of others.

Did I mentioned that they are free?

Since a journey of 985 miles (about 1580 km.) is not done in one day (my GPS estimated a 14 hours trip), and driving alone one it can not be done continuously, i decided to stop just after midnight in a MOTEL along the way (yes, a hotel like the one of of Norman Bates in the movie Psicosys).

The next day I woke up early and got on my way ... as the previous day, I took it calmly, driving at the maximum speed (*almost* all the time), and stopping to stretch my legs every couple of hours ... I arrived to the hotel in Alabama at 5:20 pm (4:20 local time) almost 24 hours after leaving NJ.

My family did not knew I was coming, so upon arrival I went to the hotel, took a shower and changed my clothes and showed up at the restaurant.
They were all there, so it was much easier and fun. Saying that they were surprised is and understatement, they could not understand anything, much less when I mentioned that I had driven all the way from NJ.
The hotel was near their house, so it was really easy and comfortable to come and go every morning and every night and I was comfortable knowing that I was not imposing myself among them, specially my nice that it's no longer a girl but a young woman

These days we chatted, ate and enjoy ... :-)

We went to Vulcan Park, an old steel plant that was converted into a park and recreation area (one of government plans that pushed the U.S. out the crisis of the '30s)

and we also visited the falls Noccabula

On Sunday, around 4:30 I started my return trip, following the same route used to come, and just like before, stopping every couple of hours to rest, drink, buy gasoline, etc., at night i stopped in a motel along the route to sleep.

As I mentioned before, on my return return (when I was a little over 100 miles away from home) the route was closed by an accident and police are diverting all traffic by alternative routes, once more, the GPS justify the investment by showing an alternative route (one that police did not suggest to the general traffic because it passes thru the heart of 2 towns and they could not divert the highway traffic trough them), so I saved a lot of time and gas by taking the road again much earlier and with almost no traffic for a long time.

Miles driven: 2180
Fuel: $ 250
Motels: $ 110
Coffee, mineral water, sandwiches, etc.: $ 25
Tolls: $ 0.75

My family's face when I showed up: PRICELESS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are things that money can't buy, those are the ones you enjoy more!

Well, that's it for today ...Mariano S.
